What does that mean…SoMoor?

Well, we wanted a name for this little company that would be easy to remember and would also be kind of fun. With the last names of South and Mooradian, Barbara decided to try combining them. Then she hit on the slogan “Put some Maui in your mouth; you’ll want SoMoor.” And there you have it: simple, easy to remember and to the point. And it’s true…you really will want SoMoor.

Barbara Mooradian ("Moor")

Barbara’s family and friends loved her jams and jellies so much, they said, “You should try sell dis stuff!" So she did, using only locally grown fruits and vegetables (and one of her mama’s recipes). From climbing the hillsides to harvest the liliko’i to pasting on the labels, she handcrafts every jar with aloha. With a background of 14 years as a fine dining pastry chef, Barbara brings a passion for creating only the very best and the most unique. Her joy is the look on a customer’s face when they first experience the wonderful flavors found in each and every jar. A true labor of love, she is uncompromising when it comes to quality, freshness and taste. She uses only the freshest fruits that are in season and grown locally on Maui. Each batch is hand processed from the fresh fruit to the finished jar. And as she is so fond of telling customers, “This is what Maui tastes like.”

Cris South ("So")

Cris brings 16 years of restaurant and kitchen management to the table to balance the team that is SoMoor. Although you will find her cutting and scooping fruit and standing over a boiling canner, she works mainly on the business end…designing labels, business cards, signage, dealing with marketing and helping to staff tables at craft fairs and shows. Cris also has retail and sales experience that makes her very passionate about the best possible customer service. Although she has helped develop a couple of the products brought to you by SoMoor, she prefers to focus on getting the finished jar in your hands and leave most of the kitchen genius to her partner Barbara.

Mama Rose and Pualei

Rose Mooradian is Barbara's mom and the creator of what we call Mom's Mango Chutney, a recipe she worked on for years before winning a Blue Ribbon at the Maui County Fair. She has been a Maui resident for 35 years. After raising her 3 daughters, she decided to realize a life-long dream and joined the Peace Corps at the age of 58 where she remained in her beloved Africa for 5 years. Now a retired nurse and passionate gardener, she still hand-peels mangoes every time we go into production. Mom made what we consider to be the perfect mango chutney and we are proud she has passed it on to us to offer to you.
